Geospatial Signal Strength Analysis Using BigQuery
As a Data Analyst Intern at Geotab, I worked with petabytes of vehicle telemetry data stored in Google BigQuery, focusing on modem signal strength reported by over 2 million vehicles globally. Using SQL, I queried and aggregated this data by geolocation to identify trends in cellular signal quality across regions. I then integrated the results with the Mapbox API to generate interactive hexbin visualizations, revealing how signal strength improves near major urban centers and declines in remote areas. These visualizations were filterable by carrier, network technology (e.g., 4G, 5G, LTE CAT1), and even modem model, enabling detailed comparative analysis. This work provided critical insights to support modem selection and compatibility decisions for future Geotab hardware deployments.
